Winding through the pleasant countryside of southeastern Massachusetts, the Cape Cod Railroad was incorporated in 1846 to connect the town of Middleborough in Plymouth County with the Fall River Railroad to the southwest. Originally called the Cape Cod Branch Railroad, it was renamed in 1854 and later merged with the Old Colony Railroad in 1872.

The Cape Cod Railroad has gone through several more incarnations since that time and was used by Amtrak for the decade between 1986 and 1996. Since 1999, the route has been operated by the heritage line Cape Cod Central Railroad. Today, the railway’s former rollingstock can still be found, including the elegantly disheveled coach pictured above.

Proudly bearing the name of Cape Cod Railroad and numbered 5436, the retired railway carriage was built in 1950 by the Canadian Car and Foundry. It’s understood to have latterly been in storage at Rochester, MA. Photographer John Mooney snapped to striking image above.
