Beached in the shallows of southern Greece’s coastal waters, her bow raised above the water, this old vessel was abandoned to the elements years ago. Pictured here, the earthen hue of her rust-streaked hull is testament to years of idleness and neglect. Yet she makes for a photogenic wreck against the backdrop of the Salamis Naval Base, located on an island of the same name one nautical mile off Piraeus.
The abandoned ship is thought to have been a container vessel of some kind. Photographer RF-Edin wrote on Flickr: “There is not much information about this vessel. It was/is a water carrier and it belonged to the Port Authority of Piraeus.”
What is well known, however, is that back in 480 BC the straits around Salamis Island echoed with the sound of war. It was here that the Battle of Salamis was fought between a collection of allied Greek city states and the invading Persian forces of King Xerxes. Though outnumbered, the result was a resounding victory for the Greek states under Themistocles, making the site apt for a naval base in modern times.
